Gray balance is the key, for color as well as black and white reproduction. This gray balance is critical because all colors are based on the three elements RGB and a neutral gray is an equal amount of each color. Therefore a system calibrated with a proper gray balance has all three color elements RG & B balanced and hence the color is balanced.
